Description:
I designed this house for my friend Ken Scott in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Ken was a major force in fashion in Milan and an amazing colorist. I learned to understand color and it's effect on the spirit from him. He said that color was the visual expression of emotion. That is why Van Goghs paintings are so powerful and Monjardini's interiors so sublime; Ken was definitely not a vanilla and cream guy. I oversaw the construction of the house and designed much of the outdoor space as well as the interiors. Dark green Mexican Talavera tiles for the interior walls of the living room and lacquered the ceilings of bright leaf green make a cool retreat on sultry days; so essential in a hot climate. You live outdoors in the garden and by the pool. At high noon it's chill time and a welcome transition from the sultry bright gardens. Ken entertained constantly and the terraced gardens were ideal for large gatherings. It was a glorious time in Curnavaca. The international Cafe Society still existed then. Barbara Hutton, Dolores del Rio, Rothchilds and Gettys, the gorgeous Merle Oberon, Porfirio Rubirosa, all did their turn. Parties were constant and stellar. I was a dinner companion of Helen Hays one evening, a great lady with a great sense of humor. She told the most hysterical stories of Hollywood in it's heyday. Ken told me once that I would look back on those days as some of the most wonderful in my life. He was right.
