Description:
A pallet of whites creates a brilliant atmosphere of light on a large secluded property facing the Atlantic on an island in Florida. The creamy whites and cool Carrera marble floors accentuate the sparkling warm southern ocean light that permeates the entire house. The design concept is gracious but never pretentious. It is about casual living and entertaining. The client instructed, "Don't give me a palatial court, give me comfort and ease." The creamy white envelope of the rooms sets off dark objects like the circular Lois Nevelson sculpture over the mantle in the Living Room. We furnished the Ocean Room with white upholstered plain modern seating custom built for the space. Ratan wing back chairs and carved antique pieces create dimension and interest. A large 19th Century tapestry of a forest scene focuses the end wall adding depth to the space. We chose wood paneling and a coral red scheme in the den. This room is used in the evening and creates a rich sexy atmosphere at sunset. The Dining room was kept small and painted with a mural depicting a fantasy ruined courtyard with exotic plants and flowers with monkeys perching on the walls. The Cabanya is an Art Deco influence whimsy, using original Paul Frankle deco rattan club chairs flanked by tables referencing the Mephis Movement, which I designed. This project resonated with magazines in Brazil, Mexico, Japan and Turkey where it was extensively published.
