Description:
The great art collector and philanthropist Emily Fisher Landau hired me to design her apartment on the Upper East Side. When we met, she asked, “What would you do with the space?” I suggested black stained millwork and white walls. It was disciplined design driven by a client with an impeccable eye for what she wanted. It was an exercise in rich black and brilliant white with art as the accent. Every detail was carefully considered. All focus was on an already impeccable collection of modern art, since grown to become legendary. Black mill work created separate volumes from white walls resulting in distinct fields for each work of art. I designed the ceiling fixture over the dining table as a huge industrial bearing with round light bulbs representing the ball bearings. The Music Room banquette, the dining table and the Master Bedroom case units were also my design. We selected furniture from great modern designers such as Mies van der Rohe, T.H. Robesjohn-Gibbings, Carl Springer, and Paul Jones. The art speaks of the amazing vision of this great lady whom I always think of as a force of nature. I was fortunate to have Horst P. Horst photograph the apartment. It is a lasting record of an important space in New York interior design history long gone.
